Explorations in Science
Middle School Science
The Middle School science curriculum is closely aligned to the National Science Education Standards and Illinois Science Standards. NGS science learning modules address the standards, focusing on core content, cross-cutting concepts, and scientific and engineering practices. In addition to their Project Lead the Way curriculum, NGS students participate in learning modules which have been evaluated and recommended by the National Science Foundation. These engaging and rigorous modules address challenging real-world issues. Textbooks are used periodically in the classroom for supplemental learning and as a reference.
The recent STEM curriculum initiatives call for science to be investigative and to allow students the opportunity to solve problems. Through hands-on experiences, students acquire inquiry, experimentation, and engineering design skills and deepen their understanding of concepts in physical science, life science, earth/space science, and engineering. NGS Middle School students design many of their investigations and engineering projects which provides a solid foundation for continued study in high school and college courses.
